Wall-Mounted or Floor-Standing Vanity: How to Choose
Floating vanities open up the floor; floor-standing units store more. Compare the trade-offs for your bathroom before you choose.

The vanity is the piece of furniture you use most in a bathroom. It holds the basin, hides the pipes and keeps the toiletries, spare towels and cleaning supplies out of sight. Choosing between a wall-mounted unit and a floor-standing one affects how the room looks, how easy it is to clean and how much you can store.
There is no single right answer. This guide sets out the practical differences so you can decide what suits your bathroom and your household.
Wall-mounted vanities: open floor, lighter look
A wall-mounted, or floating, vanity is fixed to the wall with a gap underneath. The visible floor running beneath it makes a small bathroom feel more open, and it suits a clean, modern style.
Where it works well
- Compact bathrooms. Seeing more floor makes the room read as larger, which helps in condominium and apartment bathrooms.
- Easy floor cleaning. You can mop right under the unit, and there is no base sitting in water after a wet bathroom floor is washed.
- Adjustable height. The basin can be set at a height that suits the people who use it most.
What to check first
- Wall strength. The wall must be able to carry the cabinet, the basin top and everything stored inside. This is assessed during the site visit.
- Pipe positions. Supply and waste pipes usually need to come out of the wall at the right height, which may mean some plumbing work if you are replacing an older pedestal basin.
- Storage volume. Without the space down to the floor, a floating unit usually holds less.
Floor-standing vanities: more storage, simpler fitting
A floor-standing vanity rests on legs or a solid plinth. It behaves more like a piece of furniture and tends to offer deeper drawers and taller cupboards.
Where it works well
- Family bathrooms. More cabinet space for bulk toiletries, cleaning products and spare towels.
- Walls that are not ideal for heavy fixings. The floor carries most of the weight.
- Classic or warm styles. Panelled doors and timber-look finishes sit naturally on a floor-standing base.
What to check first
- Water at floor level. In a bathroom where the whole floor gets wet, a solid base can absorb moisture over time. Raised legs, a sealed plinth and moisture-resistant materials help.
- Cleaning around it. Gaps between the base and the floor or wall need sealing so they do not collect dirt.
- Visual bulk. In a narrow bathroom, a full-height unit can make the room feel tighter.

Questions to settle before choosing
How much do you need to store?
Take a quick inventory of what currently lives on the counter, on shelves and in baskets. If it does not fit in a floating cabinet, you can either choose a floor-standing unit or add a mirror cabinet or a tall storage column next to the vanity.
Who uses the bathroom?
Young children may need a step at a standard-height basin, and older family members may prefer a basin they do not have to bend down to. A wall-mounted unit gives more flexibility with height; a floor-standing unit is fixed by its own size.
Does the layout change?
Moving the basin to another wall almost always involves plumbing changes. That is often done as part of a full renovation, alongside new tiling and waterproofing, so the pipes are hidden properly behind the new finish.
Which materials will last in humidity?
Our climate is hard on bathroom furniture. Ask about moisture-resistant boards, sealed edges and hardware suited to wet rooms. Samples of finishes are worth seeing in person before you commit.
What vanity installation includes and costs
Vanity and cabinet installation starts from RM1,200 per installation. That covers custom vanities and storage cabinets in both wall-mounted and floor-standing options. The final price depends on the size, the materials and finishes you choose, and whether pipe work is needed. Every job is quoted in writing, itemised, after a site visit.
A vanity cabinet is also part of our Standard package, and the Premium package includes a custom vanity with a mirror cabinet. If you are planning more than a vanity swap, compare the package ranges or browse our individual services.
